Organ donation is regarded as the process of donating an organby a deceased or living donor to the person suffering from organ failure. It is one of the greatest waysto do something for society.

Organ donation is a legitimate process carried out with the consent of the donor or his/her relatives. Organs & tissues obtained after donation are used for various transplants, such as liver, kidney, heart, lungs, skin, intestines, cornea, pancreas, bones, tendons, bone marrow, etc. A kidney and liver transplant procedure usually takes 4 to 5 hours.

Organ donation is categorized into two types – Deceased Organ Donations and Living Organ Donations.

Let’s know about each.

Deceased Organ Donation

Deceased organ donation is known as the process of getting an organ from the person who was declared as ‘brain dead’ by the team of doctors. And, the term “Pledge your organs” used in many public awareness campaigns about organ donation, actually means deceased organ donation.

Living Organ Donation

This type of donation is done by a living organ donor. The organs and tissues that can be donated in living organ donation include tendons, skin, cornea, one of the two kidneys, a part of the pancreas, a portion of the liver, etc. Most living donations have come from family or close friends.
